On Saturday, January 31, from 6 to 8 pm, Café Rica became a true community stage in Battle Creek. Slam Poetry, presented by NAACP Battle Creek Branch and hosted at Café Rica, brought together adults and youth for a powerful evening of spoken word, civic reflection, and connection. This event was created in partnership with Battle Creek TRHT and Arts & Culture Collective of Battle Creek, with entry proceeds benefiting S.A.F.E. Place.
More than 50 people filled the room, a packed house that felt attentive, present, and engaged. It was the kind of night that reminds you what a city can look like when people show up for one another.

A night where people shared truth out loud
Spoken word has a unique ability to hold both fire and tenderness. It is personal, honest, and immediate. This night centered on themes that matter right now, including the fierce urgency of now, civil rights, social justice, voting rights, civic engagement, racial equity, and inclusion.
What stood out most was the mix of voices. Youth and adults shared the mic and shared the room. Some poems carried questions. Others carried grief, conviction, and hope. All of them carried the same message: we are not alone in what we feel, and we have more power when we listen to each other.

Why Café Rica said yes to hosting
We believe a café can be more than a place to grab a drink. It can be a place where community happens on purpose. Hosting nights like this is part of our commitment to Battle Creek, not as a slogan, but as consistent action.
This is where our service philosophy shows up. At Café Rica, Jaguar Mentality means we show up focused and fully present. We care about the details because the details shape how people feel in a space. When a community event is happening, the goal is simple: create a room where people feel welcome, safe, and supported.
Supporting survivors through creativity
A portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to support survivors through SAFE Place of Battle Creek. That connection matters. Art has the power to open hearts, and when that energy is tied to tangible support, it becomes even more meaningful.
Hadlee Andrews Robinson, a representative of SAFE Place, shared:
“It was a beautiful night of community building and art sharing. I loved seeing so many Battle Creek community members out supporting poets. Thank you for including SAFE Place as the beneficiary. We are honored to be a part of a community that supports survivors in such a creative way.”
We are grateful the community chose to show up with both generosity and intention.
Partnerships that make an impact real
Events like this do not happen because one organization tries to do everything alone. They happen when partners collaborate with a shared purpose. We are proud to have worked alongside the NAACP, BC TRHT, and the Arts & Culture Collective of Battle Creek to create a night that blended art, civic engagement, and real community care.
That is the kind of partnership work we are committed to continuing.
